Since Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA in 1943, curiosity has always been our main driver. Over the years we have arrived at some important insights, which we would like to share.

Learning Programme

IKEA Museum offers inspiring and enriching learning experiences for schools, colleges and universities. Our engaging resources, guided tours and creative workshops centre on the values and history, present and future of IKEA. All in all, it’s about aspiring to a better life at home for the many people, while protecting the future of the planet.

Curiosity is key

Ever since Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA in 1943, curiosity has been its main driver. And over the years, IKEA has arrived at many important insights, not least by learning from its mistakes. Now, IKEA Museum wants to share those insights and learnings with you, and look towards the future. Our carefully curated exhibitions tell The Story of IKEA alongside the history of Sweden, and also present innovative ideas and solutions for healthier and more sustainable living. Knowledgeable guides will engage you and your students through our exhibitions and workshops, sparking interest, curiosity and personal discovery.

Supports formal learning

The IKEA Museum learning programme and resources support the National Curricula in Sweden and its steering documents, both overall and specifically for a wide range of subjects. All ages can benefit from its resources, guided tours and workshops, from compulsory school including pre-school, to upper secondary. In addition, our learning programme and resources can benefit universities and university colleges, Higher Vocational Education, folk high schools, and other artistic and cultural educational programmes.

Step into the shoes of an IKEA designer and create your own prototype of something that enables you, or the many people, to live a better everyday life. Everything we do in the workshop is based on the five principles of Democratic Design, namely achieving form, function, quality and sustainability, at a low price. The workshop gives participants insight into designing for circularity, and how one can help the many people live a healthier and more sustainable life at home. For example, IKEA believes that, in the words of Ingvar Kamprad, “Waste of resources is a mortal sin”. Therefore, participants are challenged and required to use sustainable materials and, ultimately, to ensure that their product fit in a flat pack! The workshop also looks at Swedish history as a way to gain a better understanding of IKEA and its basic values.

Available: Year-round
Time: 4 hours
Price: 3,000 SEK
Venue: At IKEA Museum, as an outreach event at your location or online via suitable project software.

Do you want to be inspired and gain knowledge for how to live a more sustainable life at home? This workshop builds on the ambition of IKEA for the year 2030 to encourage and enable more than 1 billion people to live better everyday lives within the limits of Earth’s environmental boundaries. It is an urgent challenge, which is why this workshop shares knowledge of how we can all work together to reach that goal. We discuss the essence of circularity, circular behaviours and circular production as the opposite of a linear method. We also highlight how recycled products should be viewed as a bank of material for the future. Using a simple guessing game, we figure out which products are made from recycled materials and from new materials that nobody uses.
