Adventures on the internet.

The World Wide Web came along in 1991, and it marked a new era. It was a tumultuous time. The world was moving from an old millennium to a new one, from analogue to digital.

It took a while for most people to realise the huge potential of the internet – and even longer for IKEA. The first IKEA website was launched in 1997, but it was not until 2001 that IKEA products could be purchased online.

Here you can travel back in time and see what the website looked like in 1998. Step inside our time capsule – a kind of condensed 1990s – and surf around.

STORÅ loft bed

BIALITT wardrobe

Being alone is rare around here.

Three of us live together, like lots of students do. But we're also in the same band so our rooms are the only place to get privacy. We all have them set up differently, I'm the only one with a loft and a wardrobe. But we all have plenty of room to study and sleep. When it's quiet, that is.

We're roommates.

The ideal furniture for students is practical, affordable and easy to move.

We’re teaching our daughter how to create masterpieces.

In our family, creativity is important because we are all artists. Even our daughter is starting to appreciate beautiful and intriguing things. Like how we set our dining room table every night. Composition, colours and shapes are important to us... almost as much as dinner!

This is where we like to be creative.

Practical and colourful place settings can compliment your furnishings.

OPTIMAL wine glass

RALJANS cereal bowls

There are more books in here than my son read in university.

Our son moved away a few years ago. And just recently, we decided that we could use the extra room for a library. But we wanted to make sure that we didn’t throw out his favourite things. So we stored all of his stuff and added these new bookshelves. It’s nice to be able to relax in here for a change!

Turning a kid's room into a library is simple with new bookshelves.

BILLY bookcases

FAS lamps

Choosing a name is difficult. Redecorating shouldn’t be.

We're going to make a few changes. Like creating a house that not only looks good but is safe for our baby. Nothing to slip on, no sharp objects, nothing fragile. And we just found furnishings that do both. Like our new sofa, table and storage system. So now we can worry about what to name our child...instead of where he, or she, will crawl.

Soon there will be three of us.

Consider decorative home furnishings that are safe for children.

TIMMERMAN storage system

HÄTTINGE coffee table

We believe in family-style living.

Even though we’re still unpacking, we know how we want our home. We need one big room for eating, talking and relaxing. So our priority is to fill that room with functional, but warm, furniture. And everything needs to match...everything except stains!

When decorating new homes, consider creating colour schemes for each room.

POÄNG armchair

ÖRBY rugs

Part of understanding and caring for children of all ages is knowing what they want. And the other part is getting ready for the unexpected.

Play and Learn

Toys, as well as games, shouldn’t just be toys--they should help develop imagination, creativity, understanding and be lots of fun!

Fun and Games

Let the games begin! Colour in the IKEA on-line colouring book, play with a sliding puzzle or with a concentration game.

Furniture and Accessories

Since everything in a kid’s life is about playing, their room should also be playful. Like furniture that can take a trip to the moon one day and be a farm the next.
