What makes a home?

4 February – 14 May 2017

Here at IKEA, we are interested in how people live their lives at home. So we undertake annual home surveys, interviewing thousands of people around the world about their everyday life. In the What makes a home? exhibition, we show you what we have learnt.

40% say their home has a particular smell.

What is the smell of home for you? Does furniture have body language? What sounds do you not like hearing at home, and what ones make you feel good? Can ‘home’ be somewhere other than where you live? A home should be functional, but function alone doesn’t go far. Sensory impressions are just as important as walls, floors and ceilings. They add a soul to the place – or perhaps the feeling – we call home. In this exhibition for all ages and senses, we visualise the fact-laden Life at Home report through installations, objects and built room settings.

About the Life at Home report

Everything we do at IKEA is based on understanding people’s needs, hopes and dreams. Our curiosity and the insights we gain about life at home is crucial to our design and product development. One of our most important tools for gathering new knowledge is the annual Life at Home report.
