Young Swedish Design is both an annual award and a touring exhibition that highlights young talent in design and architecture. After the previous stop at Sara Kulturhus in Skellefteå, it is now Älmhult’s turn to host the works.
From the hundreds of entries submitted, a total of 25 works were chosen by a panel of industry experts. The exhibition is a broad display of expression – from sculptural architecture and educational industrial design, to nostalgic textile crafts and experimental furniture design.
“We want ÄLMHULT to be an enabler for tomorrow’s designers, a breeding ground for the next generation of design. This is why it’s such an honour to be involved with Young Swedish Design once again. This year’s exhibitors showcase tremendous craftsmanship while there is also a distinct element of responsibility, both in terms of material choices and the wider world. This bodes well for the next generation of design,” says Therese Ståhl, project coordinator at IKEA Museum.
Some of the exhibitors have been awarded scholarships by one of Young Swedish Design’s partner organisations. IKEA of Sweden has awarded working scholarships to Adrian Bursell and Siri Svedborg for their work Burn and Turn. The scholarships include a six-month paid internship at product development company IKEA of Sweden in Älmhult, as well as paid lodging during the internship period.
Young Swedish Design 2025 is on at IKEA Museum in Älmhult between 18 September and 12 October. The final stop for the tour is Katrinetorp Landeri in Malmö from 23 October to 23 November.
Opening
The exhibition opens at IKEA Museum on 18 September at 16:00. On the stage Caroline Le Bongoat, chair of the Young Swedish Design jury, and one of this year’s exhibitors, architect Rikard Ostrand, will be talking about the exhibition and its importance for the future of design.
IKEA scholarship winners Adrian Bursell and Siri Svedborg – BURN AND TURN
Burn and Turn is a series of side tables in wood and glass that highlight materials and craftsmanship. We believe that in a world of digital precision, there is a heightened demand for unique objects with room for small variations This is where craftsmanship can fulfil a function through tactility, materiality and human presence.
